Monoethylene Glycol (MEG)
Ethylene glycol (ethane-1,2-diol) is an organic compound with the formula (CH2OH)2.
It is an odorless, colorless, sweet-tasting syrup. Monoethylene glycol (MEG) is moderately toxic. MEG is conventionally produced through the hydrolysis of ethylene oxide (EO), which itself is obtained via ethylene oxidation.
HELM AG sells approx. 460.000 tons of Ethylene Glycol per year, making it one of the biggest suppliers in Europe. Monoethylene Glycol (MEG) makes up the bulk of these 460.000 tons, with 400.000 tons. The Ethylene Glycol-portfolio of HELM consists of Monoethylene Glycol (MEG), Diethylene Glycol (DEG) and Triethylene Glycol (TEG).
HELM offers individual marketing- and supply-models for its partners in the chemicals industry.
Helm has joint venture projects, off-take- and marketing-agreements with several sources in the United States, Europe, Middle East and Far East.
Our success is based on market knowledge, experience, investments and seek to add value to our partner.
HELM Kimya is distributing around 20.000 mt of MEG per year in Turkey ex our tank-system in Gebze (Istanbul area).
Examples of applications
Some 90% of the global consumption of MEG is used mainly as a raw material in the manufacturing process of polyester fibre and PET. Polyester fibre is found primarily in textile products (sportswear, carpets, upholstery). Special types of polyester fibres are used in the automotive industry (seatbelts, airbags) and in the construction (PU for isolation, painting) and transport sectors (ropes, tarpaulins). PET is best-known for its role in the manufacture of soft drink bottles.
MEG is also used in antifreeze / coolant applications, precursor to polymer, dehydrating agent and also as hydrate inhibition in natural gas treatment and in polyurethane and poliol, in polyester resin and in pharmaceuticals and cosmetics.
